![]() ![]() To help you decide for yourself where to start, In the next part of the guide I present you every pre-Rance 5D game individually. It's worth mentioning that most Rance games (up to Sengoku) are standalone and can be played first without issue. A MG employee said recently you could perfectly start from III if you do not mind that part. ![]() The bad news however is that the games up to 4.2 still came in the nineties, and can be frustrating to play, but still totally playable. So you can experience the series from the beginning if you want to. ![]() The good news is that all games from I to 5D are translated, either officially or unofficially. But that's just a small part of the experience, and it's reasonable to say not everyone gives it equal importance. The older games let you have these questions answered and introduces major characters and whole regions the same way modern games do. Why does Shizuka hate Rance despite her best friend loving him? What happened between Rance and Patton in the past? How did Rance earn the love of a foreign princess? And this is just from Rance 6 alone. If you care about the characters backstories, there's way too many unanswered questions. However I disagree with the part that said it introduces characters correctly. And I actually agree with that part, Rance VI and the games coming after are way better than the older ones when it comes to both gameplay and graphics, and they do that consistently. If you are not able to read japanese, most people would recommend you to start with Rance VI: The Collapse of Zeth, often described as the start of the "modern" Rance games, quoting here one of the 2 Rance translators working for Mangagamer. It is by all means a great game that should be played, but as this second part of this guide focusing on the canonical story, we will not look into it.Ī very polarizing question but with a very popular answer. Given the success of the game, They decided to rework the Rance canon, with Kichikuou considered an IF route and their next game Rance 5D follows the events of 4.2. It ended up being a big hit for them and became a best seller. Kichikuou Rance is a game that Alicesoft released when they were on the verge of bankruptcy, so they ended up throwing every unused idea they had for future games in a single one, which resulted in a world conquest showdown game. The first three games were remade into Rance 01, 02 and 03, giving them modern looks and updated gameplay. The games part of the main stories are in both chronological and release order : I, II, III, IV, 4.1&4.2, 5D, VI, Sengoku, Quest, IX and finally X. Accompanied by Sill, a mage who ended up as a slave, he goes on different quests in the vast world of the Continent. It's about the adventures of the cold-hearted warrior Rance who believes he is the hero the world needs. The genre vary from game to game, but most of them have RPG and Dungeon Crawler elements. The first came out in 1989, and the last one, Rance X, very recently in 2018. The Rance series consists of 10 main games, 3 rebooted games, 2 mini games and 1 "What if" game. If you are reading this, there's a big chance that the Rance games are older than you. So let's get started by presenting the Rance series for the newcomers. The first part of the guide concern the former, the second part is for both. With Sengoku Rance, one of the most popular VNs around officially coming out soon, I'm making this guide for both people who never played a game in the series and those who did and are interested to know about the older games. Of course, feel free to PM anytime if you need to ask specific questions about the Rance games without risking adventuring in the spoiler filled zone that is the alicesoft wiki. Sadly the Youtube channel containing campaigns of the old games from Rance I up to 4.2 has since been deleted permanently, so the "Let's Play" option in the guide is no longer available. This guide is still useful if you wanna skip games and need to know what you missed, especially as there's no translation of 03 coming up anytime soon. However if they're not your cup of tea and you're looking for the games with great gameplay everyone refers to, you might still wanna follow this guide's advice and start with Rance 6 or Sengoku, depending on your preference (Classical RPG vs War SRPG). So if you plan to play the Rance series in chronological order, you can safely start with those. 2021 EDIT : As of this year, Rance 01 and 02 were officially released in english. ![]()
